Overview

Motor Grader Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a motor grader to level, spread, and grade earth, gravel, asphalt, or other materials for road construction, maintenance, site preparation, and infrastructure projects. This role requires precision in achieving specified grades, slopes, and surfaces while adhering to safety protocols and project specifications.

Specific Skills
  • Must have 2–5 years of experience operating motor graders in construction, roadwork, or earth-moving environments (finish grading experience highly desirable).
  • Must be able to meet all physical requirements.
  • May require a high school diploma or equivalent, with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Must possess working knowledge, skills, and abilities for position.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions and communicate effectively with management/supervision.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and layout tools safely and efficiently.
  • Must have experience and knowledge of operating various construction equipment, including but not limited to: skidsteers, bulldozers, excavators, front-end loaders, track loaders, backhoes, and rollers.
  • Must have basic mechanical knowledge and illustrate the ability to inspect equipment.
  • Must be knowledgeable and familiar with various soil types.
  • Must illustrate knowledge of excavating and the specifications that are required for a given excavation.
  • Must be able to follow instructions correctly.
  • Must be reliable, accountable, and consistent in performing administrative processes such as, but not limited to, equipment inspection paperwork.
  • Must be willing and able to follow all instructions and safety regulations.
  • Must be able to make it to work on time and work the designated schedule, and any overtime as needed, with the proper notification.
Responsible For
  • Operate motor graders to spread, level, and compact dirt, gravel, stone, or other materials to precise grade specifications.
  • Perform fine and rough grading tasks, including shaping shoulders, slopes, ditches, and road crowns for proper drainage.
  • Adjust blade height, angle, and position using levers and controls (including GPS/Trimble systems where applicable) to achieve required tolerances.
  • Read and interpret grade stakes, blueprints, survey markings, and project plans.
  • Conduct daily pre- and post-operation inspections, routine maintenance (e.g., greasing, fluid checks), and minor repairs on the motor grader.
  • Ensure safe operation around crew members, other equipment, and site hazards, following all OSHA and company safety guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, surveyors, and team members to coordinate tasks and report progress or issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance, and daily activities.
  • Knowledgeable of equipment in respect to checking and maintaining all fluid levels and lubrication.
  • Must be willing to travel to work and stay, depending on job-site location.
  • May be asked to instruct and train employees in the safe operation of construction equipment and tools and in job techniques and skills.
  • Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • Will be responsible for all safety aspects of operating the equipment.
  • May follow signal directions from a signaler in equipment operations.
  • Will assess areas of operation for safety issues and required processes and planning of equipment operations.
  • Will assist in other job-site related tasks as assigned while not operating.
Additional Requirements
  • Constantly move about construction/industrial site. Ability to stand, walk, sit, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl as needed.
  • Proficiency in blade control, slope judgment, and reading construction plans.
  • Experience with GPS-guided systems (e.g., Trimble, Topcon) is a plus.
  • Strong hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and ability to work in varying weather conditions.
  • Constantly works in a construction environment and will be exposed to changing outdoor weather conditions.
  • Work irregular hours, weekends, overtime, and holidays as required.
  • Able to use ladders/mechanical platforms/manlifts/scaffold to access equipment/work areas, as needed (may exceed 200 feet). Able to climb and maintain balance on formwork, steel formwork, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Move and work in and around confined and cluttered places and uneven surfaces.
  • Able to complete tasks in a noisy and dusty environment.
  • May be required/able to move items weighing up to 50 pounds across construction/industrial site
  • Must hold a valid Driver's License.
  • Observe and comply with all safety and project rules, perform other duties as required.
  • Commitment to safety, with knowledge of heavy equipment protocols.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Will talk and hear to communicate.
  • Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull: objects, materials, controls, and tools.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions (including heat, rain, cold, and wind) while wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, earplugs, masks/respirators, hi-vis safety vests, leather gloves, and leather steel-toed work boots.
